Banteay Mean Chey NEWS: An 11-hectare Siem Sophon landfill worth more than US$6.5 million has been inaugurated until 2040 to improve environmental management and promote sanitation in the city in the area around the Sap River Lake.
The new landfill is a project to improve the municipal environmental management around the Sap River Lake Phase 2 under a concessional loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The project will take 10 months to construct starting from December 2023 by Heng Fitness Agency Transport and Construction Company in Sangkat Kampong Sweai, Seri Sophon District, Fort Mean Chey Province, according to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport on January 18.
The field is scheduled to be used until 2040 for approximately 128,208 people living in Sangkat Khiak, Kampong Sweai, Phra Ponpla, Nam Thala, Or Salt, Phnom and Koh Pong Sot, Siri Sophon, Fort Mean Chey Province.
State Secretary of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, Mr. Sum Wanna, at the grand opening ceremony, explained to the citizens the benefits of building a garbage dump as well as a wastewater treatment plant, which the citizens can get a lot of benefits back through recycling, such as composting.
He states: "Especially if garbage and wastewater are disposed of properly, according to technical norms, it can reduce the problem of citizens' sore throats, and citizens do not have to spend a lot on treating diseases as well."
He adds that meanwhile, if there is a hygienic environment, it will contribute to boosting the national economy through attracting tourists which enables citizens to be employed and increase income and make the area develop faster.
Therefore, in order to continue the sustainability of the landfill as well as the wastewater treatment plant, it is necessary to have the support of the citizens through the participation in paying the garbage collection fee and wastewater fee, the main goal of which is to take care of the welfare of the citizens.
In addition to the landfills, the Ministry of Public Works has already built landfills in a number of provinces such as Sihanoukville, Lap Dom, Por Set, Kampong Chhnang, Kampot, Kep, Kampong Cham, Kampong Thom, Kratie and Stung Treng.
The first pit is 64 242 cubic meters and can hold 51 414 tons of garbage and the second pit is 87 630 cubic meters and can hold 84 060 tons of garbage.
