After a forest fire in the protected area of Phnom Tamao Zoo for approximately 15 hectares was suspected to have been burned, wildlife conservation groups have called for participation in curbing forest fires, especially when the leaves are prone to burn from February.
The fire, which destroyed approximately 15 hectares of forest out of more than 2,000 hectares of the Phnom Tamao Zoo last week, has affected natural forests, wildlife habitats, wildlife, and trees that have just been planted, according to Wildlife Alliance official Tri Si Teng.
He told the Phnom Penh Post on Tuesday, February 18: "The jungle, if I don't think I'm wrong, maybe someone has been burning, it burns for up to 15 hectares, it burns and affects the saplings that we have just planted for two years.
The leadership of Phnom Tamao Zoo, zoo staff, forest guards, and local authorities of Bati district joined hands to extinguish the wildfire.
The wildlife conservation team at the zoo has expressed regret over the loss due to the forest fires, especially the pity of wild animals.
They allegedly asked a question through social media: "When you see such a wildfire, how do you feel? Many wild animals have suffered because of the wildfires, such as reptiles, and animals that cannot escape the fire, will die because of the fire, and burn to their nests.
When the leaves start to fall, which is prone to burning, the conservation group appealed to the public, especially those who like to go recreation in forest areas, to be highly cautious about using fire for cooking or barbecue.
On the other hand, smokers or beekeepers must also not be negligent in causing the wildfires.
They appealed: "From February onwards, the leaves start to fall and it is sluggish, so it is prone to burning. The forest is the home of wild animals."
Phnom Tamao Zoo has been declared by the Royal Government to be a Zoo, Protected Forest, and Zoo Park (Phnom Tamao) on an area of 2,025 hectares located in Bati District in 2022.
The park is divided into 3 major areas, which include a protected forest area for wildlife restoration to ensure wildlife conservation, conservation and sustainable development of natural resources with an area of 1 021 hectares, and Phnom Tamao Luxury Wood Botanical Garden area for tree saplings conservation and development as a 530-hectare luxury and aesthetic tree garden.
Lastly, the Phnom Tamao Zoo Park area, is an area for wildlife conservation, treatment, wildlife rescue, education, promotion, and tourism services, covering an area of 474 hectares.
