This expectation was raised by Prime Minister Hun Manet in a letter celebrating the National Day Against Malaria under the theme "We End Malaria by Reinvesting, Innovating, Reinventing, Re-Controlling" on January 25.
The Prime Minister affirmed that Cambodia is on track in the National Strategic Plan, achieving a series of fruitful achievements, including preventing malaria immunity since 2015, zero deaths from malaria since 2018, and zero malaria (or falciparum) by 2024.
He said, "In 2024, Cambodia will have only 355 cases of malaria, a decrease of 75 per cent compared to 2023, which is Cambodia's proud example of joining regional and global countries to achieve the malaria-free goal."
He continued: "Cambodia is getting closer to achieving a malaria-free Cambodia by 2025, which is an admirable and exciting journey in the end, but we also cannot relax our hands because to achieve a 100 percent sustainable end to malaria, we must continue to make more efforts together, both physically, mentally, intellectually and resourcefully...".
He called on citizens and stakeholders to participate in all ways to eradicate malaria from Cambodia this year and contribute to completely eliminating the disease by 2030.
In 2023, there were more than 1,000 malaria cases, a decrease of more than 60 percent compared to 2022, when there were more than 4,000 malaria cases.
