Cambodia Protests Thailand’s Activities at Ta Krabey Temple Amid Rising Border Tensions
The Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts of Cambodia has intensified its protest against Thailand over what it describes as continued unauthorized activities at Ta Krabey Temple, a historic site located along the sensitive Cambodia–Thailand border.
Strong Diplomatic Protest Over “Fait Accompli” Actions
In an official statement released on April 22, Cambodian authorities expressed “the strongest possible protest” against ongoing actions by Thai officials and related individuals in the area. According to the ministry, these activities are seen as attempts to create a “fait accompli” — establishing facts on the ground that could influence territorial claims.
Despite multiple formal letters sent earlier this year (January 30, April 13, and April 22, 2026), Cambodia claims that Thai authorities have continued organizing public gatherings, facilitating visits, and carrying out other activities at the temple site without permission.
Alleged Violations of Sovereignty and International Agreements
The Cambodian government states that these actions represent a serious violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Officials also raised concerns about new developments, including infrastructure construction and the continued presence of Thai personnel in the area.
According to the statement, such activities may violate several legal frameworks governing the Cambodia–Thailand border, including:
- The Franco-Siamese Treaty of 1907
- Official boundary maps at a 1:200,000 scale
- Records from joint border commissions
Additionally, Cambodia cited breaches of the 2000 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and the 2003 master plan related to the Joint Boundary Commission, as well as principles under international law and the United Nations Charter.
Concerns Over High-Level Thai Presence
The statement also criticized the presence of senior Thai officials — including ministers of culture and defense — at Ta Krabey Temple during activities on April 22. Cambodia views this as an escalation that undermines peaceful negotiation efforts.
Officials warned that such actions risk increasing tensions rather than resolving the long-standing border dispute through diplomatic means.
Cambodia Calls for Immediate De-escalation
Cambodia has called on the Thai government to:
- Immediately stop all activities at the site
- Withdraw all personnel from the area
- Avoid any actions that could further escalate tensions
At the same time, Cambodia reaffirmed its commitment to resolving the dispute peacefully through existing bilateral mechanisms, particularly the Joint Boundary Commission.
A Growing Flashpoint in Cambodia–Thailand Relations
The latest protest highlights rising tensions over a border issue that has persisted for decades. Ta Krabey Temple is now emerging as a new flashpoint in Cambodia–Thailand relations, even as both sides continue to maintain formal negotiation channels.
