California Lawyer Rescued by His Brother After Falling Overboard in Pacific Ocean
A dramatic survival story from the Pacific Ocean is once again capturing attention after a California lawyer was rescued hours after falling overboard during a solo boating trip — thanks to his own brother spotting him floating in open water.
In January 2006, 58-year-old attorney Craig McCabe set out alone from Marina del Rey aboard his 65-foot yacht. According to reports, McCabe was going through a major turning point in his life, debating whether to continue working in high-paying corporate law or return to helping abused children through advocacy work.
But the trip quickly turned into a fight for survival.
While leaning over the side of the yacht, McCabe suddenly lost his balance and fell into the Pacific Ocean. With nobody else onboard, the vessel continued moving away, leaving him stranded alone miles from shore.
McCabe reportedly tried swimming toward a nearby buoy while struggling against exhaustion and the cold ocean water. As time passed, he became increasingly weak and feared he would not survive.
In an incredible twist, McCabe found a partially inflated party balloon floating in the water and used it to help stay afloat. However, as the balloon slowly lost air, his condition worsened and he began slipping beneath the surface.
Meanwhile, his brother Lance McCabe had already joined the rescue effort after learning about the missing yacht. Borrowing a speedboat, Lance headed into the ocean near Santa Catalina Island to search for his brother.
After scanning miles of open water, Lance reportedly noticed what appeared to be a tiny speck in the distance. Against overwhelming odds, it turned out to be Craig still alive in the water.
Lance and another man rushed toward him, jumped into the ocean, and pulled him onto the rescue boat just as he was close to drowning.
Craig McCabe was suffering from hypothermia but survived the ordeal and later recovered at a hospital.
The near-death experience reportedly had a major impact on his life. Following the rescue, McCabe decided to step away from focusing only on corporate law and returned to advocacy work supporting abused children — a path he said gave his life deeper meaning.
The remarkable rescue story continues to be remembered as an extraordinary example of survival, timing, and family determination in the face of impossible odds.
