Cambodia Police Rescue 35 Victims in Human Trafficking Crackdown Near Wat Phnom

Authorities in Cambodia have rescued 35 people, including 34 women, during a major anti-human trafficking operation carried out near the famous Wat Phnom area in Phnom Penh.

The operation was conducted by Cambodia’s Anti-Human Trafficking and Juvenile Protection Department in cooperation with the Phnom Penh Municipal Police. Officials inspected and raided two entertainment venues suspected of illegal activities involving human trafficking and sexual exploitation.

Two Locations Targeted in Phnom Penh Raid

According to authorities, the raid took place on the evening of May 22 at two businesses identified as “Katrina Band” and “Katrina Sam Sam 110,” located along Street 110 in the Wat Phnom neighborhood of Daun Penh district.

Investigators said the locations had been under suspicion for allegedly exploiting women and minors through illegal operations hidden behind entertainment business activities.

35 Victims Safely Rescued

As a result of the operation, police successfully rescued 35 victims from immediate danger. The rescued individuals were later transferred to the Department of Social Affairs and partner organizations where they will receive:

  • Temporary shelter and protection

  • Psychological and emotional support

  • Medical assistance

  • Vocational training and rehabilitation services

Officials said the goal is to help victims rebuild their lives with dignity and long-term support.

One Suspect Arrested

Police also detained one suspect believed to be a manager or supervisor connected to the operation. The individual has been transferred to specialized authorities for further legal investigation and possible prosecution under Cambodia’s anti-human trafficking laws.

Authorities emphasized that businesses involved in trafficking, exploitation, or illegal activities could face severe penalties, including permanent closure and asset confiscation.

Cambodia Expands Anti-Trafficking Campaign

The successful raid is part of a broader nationwide campaign launched across several key districts in Phnom Penh, including:

  • Daun Penh

  • Sen Sok

  • Chbar Ampov

Security experts have praised Cambodia’s evolving law enforcement approach, noting stronger intelligence gathering, inter-agency coordination, and proactive risk assessment methods.

According to Cambodia’s National Committee for Counter Trafficking, authorities handled 272 trafficking and sexual exploitation cases in 2025 — a 37% increase compared to previous years.

The report also revealed:

  • 410 suspects were arrested

  • 994 victims were rescued

  • 209 of the victims were minors

Officials say the increase in detected cases reflects stronger investigations and improved public trust in Cambodia’s justice system.

Public Supports Stronger Enforcement

Many local residents, parents, and legal business owners have welcomed the crackdown, describing it as an important step toward improving public safety and protecting vulnerable women and children from exploitation.

Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining safer communities across Phnom Penh and warned that any business violating anti-trafficking laws would face maximum legal action.
