Cambodia Ranked No. 1 for Natural Environment in Global 2026 Report

Cambodia has been ranked the world’s top country for natural environment quality in 2026, according to a global survey and ranking released by U.S. News & World Report. The recognition highlights Cambodia’s growing efforts to balance economic development with environmental protection and sustainable resource management.

The report praised Cambodia for its strong environmental governance, clean air quality, biodiversity conservation, and long-term sustainability initiatives. Officials say the achievement reflects years of work protecting forests, wildlife habitats, and natural resources across the country.

Cambodia’s Environmental Success Recognized Globally

Cambodian Environment Minister Eang Sophalleth described the ranking as a major national achievement and a source of pride for the Cambodian people.

According to the Ministry of Environment, Cambodia currently manages 73 protected natural areas covering more than 7 million hectares — approximately 41% of the country’s total land area. These protected zones play a critical role in preserving forests, wildlife, and biodiversity.

The government has also strengthened law enforcement efforts against illegal logging and environmental crimes while working closely with local communities, conservation groups, and international partners.

Green Strategy and Forest Restoration

Cambodia continues promoting its environmental development strategy focused on:

  • Clean environments

  • Green development

  • Long-term sustainability

  • Climate resilience

  • Biodiversity conservation

As part of these efforts, the Ministry of Environment has launched nationwide tree-planting campaigns aimed at distributing and planting at least one million trees. Officials say the program not only restores forest cover but also supports community livelihoods and helps Cambodia move toward its carbon neutrality goal by 2050.

Southeast Asia’s Environmental Leader

The report also ranked Cambodia as the top country in Southeast Asia for natural environmental quality. Analysts say Cambodia’s large protected forest areas and increasing sustainability efforts helped improve its international standing.

Government officials credited both current and previous administrations for laying the foundation of Cambodia’s environmental policies and conservation programs.

The recognition comes as global attention increasingly focuses on climate change, environmental sustainability, and the protection of natural ecosystems worldwide.
