Cambodia Strengthens Electric Vehicle Safety Measures as EV Usage Rises
The Cambodian government is stepping up efforts to improve electric vehicle (EV) safety as the number of EVs on the country’s roads continues to grow rapidly.
In a new directive issued on May 12, Cambodia’s Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology, and Innovation urged companies, factories, and businesses involved in producing, importing, and selling electric vehicles to strengthen public education and safety training for EV users.
Officials warned that limited public understanding of EV safety standards could create risks for drivers, passengers, public property, the environment, and society.
EV Popularity Growing Across Cambodia
Electric vehicles, especially imported models from China, are becoming increasingly common in Phnom Penh and other provinces across Cambodia as consumers look for cleaner and more affordable transportation options.
The ministry’s latest announcement is viewed as an important step toward improving safety management within Cambodia’s growing EV industry.
New Safety Requirements for EV Companies
Under the new guidelines, all businesses selling electric vehicles must provide clear safety instructions in the Khmer language, including visual illustrations, before vehicles are released to customers.
The ministry said companies must educate drivers about emergency situations and potential risks, including:
Vehicle system failures that prevent doors or windows from opening
Battery fires or explosions after collisions
Battery overheating during charging
Risks of charging during heavy rain
Electrical system failures when driving through flooded roads during the rainy season
Businesses are also encouraged to create short educational videos explaining EV safety procedures and possible hazards.
Registration and Technical Standards Required
The government additionally stated that all electric vehicles must be officially registered and certified under Cambodian safety and technical standards.
Companies are expected to cooperate with Cambodian standards inspectors and comply with national technical regulations.
Cambodia Pushes Toward Clean Energy Transportation
In recent years, Cambodia has actively promoted clean energy transportation through various incentive policies designed to encourage EV adoption.
However, infrastructure supporting electric vehicles — including charging stations, technical repair services, and public awareness — is still developing across the country.
Authorities hope the new safety measures will reduce risks while improving confidence in electric vehicle technology among Cambodian consumers.
The ministry emphasized that cooperation from all businesses involved in the EV sector will be essential to ensuring public safety and supporting the sustainable growth of Cambodia’s transportation future.
