China’s New BMW iX3 and i3 EVs Are Longer — And More Advanced Than Global Versions
BMW has officially revealed new long-wheelbase versions of its upcoming electric vehicles in China, and they are more than just stretched models. The new BMW iX3 L and i3 L come with additional comfort, upgraded features, and design changes specifically aimed at attracting Chinese EV buyers.
The vehicles are part of BMW’s next-generation “Neue Klasse” electric lineup and offer significantly more rear passenger space while also introducing several practical upgrades that may actually make them better than the standard global versions.
More Space, Better Comfort
The most noticeable change is the longer wheelbase, giving rear passengers far more legroom and comfort.
The new BMW i3 L now rides on a wheelbase of over 3 meters, making it even longer than the larger BMW i5 in some dimensions. The extra size mainly benefits rear-seat passengers, which is especially important in the Chinese market, where many buyers prefer spacious back seats.
Meanwhile, the BMW iX3 L SUV also receives major interior upgrades, including:
Softer and more padded rear seats
Increased seat reclining angles
Additional physical seat controls
Exclusive two-tone interior options
Despite the added size, both vehicles still maintain balanced proportions and sleek styling.
BMW Removes Pop-Out Door Handles
One surprising change is the removal of electronic pop-out door handles. Instead, BMW has switched to flush mechanical handles with traditional pull access.
The move comes as China prepares stricter safety regulations for electronic door handles beginning next year. Many drivers may actually prefer the simpler design because it is easier to use and less mechanically complex.
Extra Lighting and China-Specific Features
The sporty i3 L M Sport version also includes illuminated M logos on the rear pillar area — a design detail created specifically for Chinese customers, where illuminated exterior styling elements remain very popular.
BMW appears to be carefully tailoring these vehicles to local tastes while also improving usability and comfort.
Impressive Electric Driving Range
BMW says the long-wheelbase i3 L could deliver an estimated CLTC driving range of up to 1,000 kilometers (620 miles), making it one of the longest-range EV sedans in its class.
The company continues pushing aggressively into the competitive Chinese EV market, where local brands have rapidly grown in popularity.
Expansion Beyond China
Unlike many previous China-exclusive long-wheelbase BMW models, the new iX3 L and i3 L will also be exported to other Asian markets.
BMW confirmed the iX3 L will arrive in countries including:
India
Indonesia
Thailand
Malaysia
However, Europe and the United States are not expected to receive these China-built versions, as those regions will source Neue Klasse EVs from BMW’s factory in Hungary instead.
BMW Targets Growing EV Competition
As Chinese electric vehicle makers continue dominating their home market, BMW is adapting its strategy with more spacious interiors, luxury-focused features, and localized designs.
The new iX3 L and i3 L show how global automakers are increasingly customizing vehicles specifically for Chinese consumers — and in some cases, creating versions that may actually outperform the models sold elsewhere.
