Elderly California Couple Found Dead After Alleged Celebrity Romance Scam
The tragic deaths of Donald Whitaker, 80, and Karen Whitaker, 79, have shocked their local community and raised fresh concerns about online scams targeting older adults.
Couple Found Dead Inside California Home
According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office, the couple were discovered dead inside their home in Bermuda Dunes on May 15 after a welfare check was requested by a concerned neighbor.
Authorities said both victims suffered traumatic injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators later stated they believe the incident was likely a murder-suicide. However, officials clarified there is currently no evidence directly linking the online scammer to the deaths.
The case remains under investigation.
Scam Reportedly Began on Facebook
Family friend Joy Miedecke said Karen Whitaker became involved in an online relationship with someone claiming to be Tom Selleck after posting memories online about a deceased high school friend.
According to Miedecke, the individual contacted Karen through Facebook and claimed to have known the same friend years earlier.
Karen reportedly believed the person was genuinely the famous “Blue Bloods” actor and began communicating regularly through text messages.
Scammer Slowly Gained Trust
Over time, the scammer allegedly gained Karen’s trust and eventually began asking for money.
Miedecke said the first request involved an $80 ticket to an event, which Karen paid for using a gift card after receiving instructions from the scammer.
The requests later increased, with the scammer allegedly convincing Karen to send hundreds of dollars more for additional expenses and events.
Authorities say this method matches common tactics used in online romance and impersonation scams, where criminals ask victims to purchase gift cards and share the card numbers remotely.
Family and Friends Tried to Intervene
Concerned friends reportedly warned Karen multiple times that the messages were part of a scam, but she refused to believe them.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office said financial elder abuse involving Karen had previously been reported to authorities.
Adult protective services later became involved after the messages reportedly became more personal and romantic.
According to Miedecke, Donald Whitaker and the couple’s adult children attempted to stop the situation by:
Closing bank accounts
Cutting up credit cards
Restricting access to money
Despite those efforts, Karen allegedly continued finding ways to send money to the scammer.
Growing Concerns Over Elder Fraud
The heartbreaking case has renewed public concern about online scams targeting elderly people through social media and fake celebrity accounts.
The Federal Trade Commission has repeatedly warned consumers that scammers often impersonate celebrities, military personnel, or romantic partners to manipulate victims emotionally and financially.
Experts say older adults are particularly vulnerable to these scams because scammers often build long-term emotional relationships before requesting money.
Warning Signs of Romance and Celebrity Scams
Authorities encourage families to watch for common warning signs, including:
Requests for gift cards or wire transfers
Online relationships moving quickly
Secretive texting or messaging behavior
Claims involving celebrities or famous individuals
Emotional manipulation or romantic language
Friends of the Whitakers say they hope the tragedy raises awareness and helps protect other families from similar scams in the future.
A representative for Tom Selleck has not publicly commented on the case.
