Sydney Jewellery Store Owner and Accomplice Jailed Over Fake $2.8 Million Robbery Insurance Plot
A Sydney jewellery store owner and his accomplice have been sentenced to prison after staging a fake armed robbery in an attempt to claim millions of dollars in insurance money.
The elaborate scheme, which targeted a luxury jewellery store inside Sydney’s Hilton Hotel, ultimately collapsed after investigators uncovered evidence that the robbery had been carefully planned by the store owner himself.
Fake Robbery Planned to Solve Financial Problems
Former jewellery businessman Michel Elias Germani, 68, was identified by the court as the mastermind behind the operation, while 60-year-old Mounir Helou participated in carrying out the staged robbery.
The incident took place in January 2023 at Germani Jewellers, where two men entered the store after hours, tied up Germani and a shop assistant, and escaped with cash and jewellery.
Authorities later discovered the robbery was fabricated as part of an attempted insurance fraud worth more than AU$2.8 million.
Court documents revealed Germani was facing serious financial difficulties at the time, including large unpaid rental debts linked to the Hilton Hotel premises.
Insurance Claim Raised Suspicion
Investigators found that Germani had increased the store’s insurance coverage shortly before the robbery occurred.
He later submitted claims alleging that 164 pieces of jewellery had been stolen during the incident.
However, insurance investigators became suspicious, eventually rejecting the claim after spending tens of thousands of dollars examining the case.
The court heard that Germani falsely reported being threatened by armed robbers and provided misleading statements to police in an effort to support the insurance payout request.
Jail Sentences Handed Down
On Thursday, Sydney’s Downing Centre District Court sentenced Germani to four years and 10 months in prison.
He will become eligible for parole after serving a minimum term of three years and three months.
Helou, who assisted in the staged robbery, received a sentence of two years and 10 months behind bars.
Both men had already spent time in custody, which was considered during sentencing.
Court Rejects Claims Against Shop Assistant
During proceedings, prosecutors attempted to determine whether shop assistant Lana Al-Khoury knowingly participated in the fake robbery.
However, the judge ruled there was insufficient evidence to prove she was involved in the scheme.
The court also heard that Germani had unsuccessfully attempted to recruit others for the staged robbery before finally carrying it out.
Luxury Reputation Tarnished
Before the scandal emerged, Germani Jewellers promoted itself as a luxury brand connected to celebrity and royal clients, including claims of designing jewellery for Princess Diana and Middle Eastern royalty.
The fraud case has since drawn major public attention in Australia, with prosecutors describing it as a calculated attempt to exploit the insurance system for financial gain.
Authorities say the case highlights the growing sophistication of insurance fraud investigations and the legal consequences facing those who attempt to stage criminal incidents for profit.
