What began as what seemed like an ordinary insect bite quickly became a frightening medical ordeal for a 19-year-old woman in Oklahoma.
Emma Selvidge says she woke up early one morning with a small swollen lump on her forehead. Believing it was likely a bug or spider bite, she sought treatment at an urgent care clinic. Within hours, however, the swelling rapidly spread toward one of her eyes, leading to multiple hospitalizations, surgery, and temporary vision loss.
Her experience serves as a reminder that symptoms that appear minor at first can sometimes require immediate medical attention.
Rapid Swelling Raised Serious Concerns
After noticing the unusual swelling, Selvidge visited an urgent care clinic, where medical providers initially suspected an infected insect or spider bite.
She received treatment, including antibiotics, before returning home.
According to Selvidge, the situation changed dramatically shortly afterward.
Within minutes, the swelling expanded significantly and began affecting the area around her eye.
Despite attempting to continue her normal workday, her symptoms worsened, including increasing difficulty seeing clearly.
She later visited an emergency department, where doctors ordered imaging studies after suspecting a deeper infection.
Surgery Becomes Necessary
Doctors eventually determined that an abscess had developed, requiring emergency surgery to drain the infection.
During the procedure, physicians also discovered an unrelated medical issue involving her tonsils that may require future treatment.
For Selvidge, who had never undergone surgery before, the experience was overwhelming.
Fortunately, the operation successfully reduced the facial swelling.
However, recovery proved to be more complicated than expected.
Symptoms Returned Multiple Times
Although she was discharged from the hospital after several days, the medical problems did not end there.
Approximately one month later, the swelling returned.
Doctors treated her again as the condition caused severe sinus infections and persistent headaches.
Only weeks after recovering from that hospitalization, the swelling appeared for a third time.
Each recurrence brought new uncertainty because physicians were still unable to determine the exact underlying cause.
Ongoing Vision Problems
Following the repeated episodes, Selvidge continues to experience lingering health complications.
She says she now deals with:
Frequent headaches
Vision disturbances
Sinus-related symptoms
Ongoing recovery from surgery
After additional scans, doctors diagnosed narrowing in one of the veins involved in draining blood from the brain, known as mild transverse sinus stenosis.
Medical providers continue investigating whether this finding is related to her recurring symptoms.
At this stage, doctors have not identified a definitive explanation for why the swelling continues to return.
Sharing Her Story to Encourage Others
Throughout her recovery, Selvidge has documented her experience on social media to encourage others not to ignore unusual symptoms.
She says one of the biggest lessons she learned was the importance of listening to your body and seeking additional medical evaluation when symptoms worsen or do not improve as expected.
While she still hopes doctors will eventually determine the cause of her condition, she remains focused on recovering one day at a time.
