Importantly, however, consumers should not assume that every vegetable with a strange appearance or smell contains formaldehyde.
1. Pay Attention to an Unusual Smell
One simple precaution is to smell vegetables before purchasing them.
Fresh produce normally has a relatively mild, natural vegetable smell. An unusually sharp, irritating, or chemical-like odor could be a reason to choose another item.

The latest concern followed a video posted online by blogger Yu Lie Qi Ge, which allegedly showed merchants in Kangbao County, Zhangjiakou, Hebei Province, using industrial chemicals to preserve napa cabbage during transportation.

Because such allegations can involve ongoing investigations, individual claims should be treated cautiously until they are confirmed by competent authorities.
The incident nevertheless illustrates why consumers may want to pay attention to the source and handling of fresh produce.
Can You Detect Dangerous Chemicals at Home?
In most cases, no.
Visual inspection and smell can provide warning signs, but they cannot reliably identify a specific chemical or determine whether its concentration is dangerous.
A vegetable that looks normal may still contain a contaminant that cannot be seen or smelled. Conversely, an unusual smell or appearance does not necessarily mean a dangerous chemical is present.
Laboratory testing is generally needed to conclusively identify and measure chemical residues.
