NEWS: A 31-year-old Chinese actor was recently rescued from a fraud center in Myanmar where he went missing during a visit to Thailand, but his girlfriend appealed for help on social media. According to Web BBC, Wang Xin had been missing for two days before his girlfriend took to social media to appeal for help. On January 5, she wrote on the Chinese social media platform Weibo:
“We have no choice but to use the power of the internet to amplify our voices.”
Her post quickly went viral, garnering Wang's national attention and prompting government intervention. On January 7th, the 31-year-old actor was finally rescued from a fraud center in Myanmar.
The next day, Mr. Wang made his first appearance with Thai police. According to Web BBC, the actor revealed that he was lured into the facility under the guise of a well-paying job opportunity. He said he flew to Bangkok for an acting job he was offered on WeChat. He told police he realized he had been kidnapped after crossing a river into Myanmar and noticing rudimentary living conditions.
He also told Thai police that he alone had about 50 Chinese nationals detained at the same location. Notably, these centers are reportedly run by organized criminal networks, extorting victims into online scams and other fraudulent activities.
The actor's swift and mysterious rescue raises questions about the fate of those who remain trapped in the fraud center. “We are anxious to know if the rest of the Chinese people who were with him were rescued,” one social media user wrote on Weibo. “Other people's lives are lives too,” said another.
Mr. Wang told police that he was invited to appear in a film in Thailand by someone posing as an assistant production director. He said he had participated in filming in Thailand around 2018 and did not think this would be different.
She then went missing on January 3 from the Thai border town of Mae Sot, which is notorious for human trafficking operations. His girlfriend wrote on Weibo that she and his brother tried to subdue the actor and get the police involved, but with “little success.”
However, after Wang's girlfriend's post attracted national attention, a case was finally registered in China, and Thailand's embassy also said it was attaching great importance to the case. The next day, Thai and Chinese authorities announced that a 31-year-old man had been rescued.
Details of the rescue have not been disclosed. Authorities have not disclosed the exact location of the fraud center. However, Wang told police that after arriving in Bangkok, he was put in a car and taken to Myanmar, where he had his head shaved and was forced to undergo training on how to scam people over the phone. Ta. He also claimed that he didn't get much food at the fraud center and didn't have time to go to the bathroom.
Following Mr. Wang's disappearance, authorities have begun investigating other similar cases. Thai police are reportedly investigating the case of another Chinese model who disappeared on the Thailand-Myanmar border after being promised a job in Thailand.
The China Federation of Radio and Television Associations also said in a statement on Tuesday that “many actors” went abroad on false promises to film movies, resulting in “serious damage to their personal and financial security.” “We are very concerned about this,” it said in a statement.
