Cambodia's Ministry of Trade on 27 February 2025 rejected the suspicion placed on Cambodian authorities for allowing North Korea-based companies to open their businesses.
The Ministry of Commerce's rejection announcement states that on February 26, 2025, NK News reported a suspected case of a North Korean company openly advertising its control over overseas joint venture restaurants in the People's Republic of China and the Kingdom of Cambodia.
The ministry stated: "In this case, the Ministry of Commerce hereby completely rejects the information published by NK News and confirms that there is no trade registration for a company named Tongnam Trading Company or Tongnam Transport JV Co., Ltd.
The letter also said that the Ministry of Commerce has always strictly complied with the decisions of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and Cambodia's Permanent Customs Norms, delisted from the trade list, and closed all businesses related to 16 North Korean companies/enterprises in 2019 and 2022, and continued to cooperate closely with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and relevant ministries and institutions. Apply various types of sanctions as provided for in the UNSC ruling.
Lo Vichit, vice president of the Cambodia-China Chamber of Commerce, told Phnom Penh Post on February 28 that North Korean businessmen are not allowed to conduct business as well as export and import goods because the country is banned by the United Nations.
This is not only with Cambodia but with nearly 200 member countries around the world.
He continued, that apart from trade activities, North Korea is also involved in remittances, as well as many other transactions.
He stated: "The ministry is very good at issuing such a letter of confirmation, as well as showing the international community that Cambodia is a sovereign and respectful country, as well as the decisions of the United Nations, an organization representing nearly 200 members in the world.
