Phnom Penh — In recent years, the development of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in Cambodia has increased significantly. According to reports from the Ministry of Commerce and related institutions, SEZs have helped generate export revenue of over US $5.4 billion in the first 11 months of 2024. This example shows that factories and production facilities within SEZs are playing an important role in the country's export economy.

🏭 SEZ Areas and Actual Export Factories
The SEZ areas in Siem Reap Province, Preah Sihanouk Province, Bavet Province, and other regions have attracted foreign and domestic investment.

Most importantly, Exports from SEZs have not yet reached the exact threshold of "over US$100 million," but total national exports were reported at US$26 million in 2024, with exports from SEZs accounting for US$5.43 million.

The Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone (SSEZ) helps increase goods and major trade relations, with exports and imports reaching about US$4.07 million in 2024.

💡 What's increasing?
Factories producing digital equipment, electronic devices, furniture, and leather goods have started investing and exporting under SEZ certificates.

Providing tax incentives, investment support programs, and service levels helps create jobs for workers.

Exports are improving and have the potential to transform markets in ASEAN and internationally.

✅ Benefits for committees and citizens
Increase job opportunities for workers in SEZ areas.

Help boost the national income from exports and generate foreign exchange for the country.

Help enhance local production capacity and add value to domestic products.

⚠️ Challenges and Concerns
Even with growth, exports still face challenges such as electricity development, land prices, and labor conditions.

There is a need to strengthen technological capacities and train workers to meet requirements appropriately.

Transportation (logistics) issues and furnishings in the SEZ areas have also been observed.

📝 Conclusion
The increase in production and exports from SEZs in Cambodia signals that the country is progressing in the industrial sector. However, to maintain momentum and achieve continuous success, additional measures are needed, such as export capacity, human resource development, and international service connectivity. For technicians or observers, SEZs present opportunities for Cambodians, but stakeholders across the country must work together to ensure sustainable and essential growth.
