🌰 Cambodia Earns Over $1.4 Billion From Cashew Nut Exports in First Four Months of 2026

PHNOM PENH — Cambodia’s cashew nut export industry continues to show strong growth in 2026, generating more than $1.4 billion from international exports during the first four months of the year.

According to data from the Cashew Nut Association of Cambodia (CAC), Cambodia exported approximately 831,179 tons of raw cashew nuts between January and April 2026 — an increase of 24% compared to the same period in 2025.

The country earned around $1.44 billion from those exports, highlighting the growing global demand for Cambodian cashews despite earlier concerns over climate-related production challenges.

🌱 Strong Growth Despite Climate Concerns

CAC President Oun Silot said export performance in early 2026 exceeded expectations, especially after fears that extreme weather conditions could negatively affect yields and crop quality.

Farmers and experts had worried about:
• Prolonged cold weather
• Unseasonal rainfall
• Extreme heat exceeding 40°C

However, production and export volumes remained strong throughout the season.

According to industry officials, part of the success came from proactive measures by Cambodia’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, which deployed agricultural officers to local communities to help farmers adapt to changing climate conditions.

“These officials played a crucial role in helping farmers assess risks and adjust farming practices directly on-site,” Oun Silot explained.

📈 A Historic Year for Cambodia’s Cashew Industry

Industry leaders now believe 2026 could become one of the most successful years for Cambodia’s cashew sector in nearly two decades.

“This year could become a historic year for Cambodia’s raw cashew exports. Both production and prices are performing very well,” Oun Silot said.

However, he also noted that the rapid export growth mainly benefits raw exports rather than Cambodia’s domestic processing industry.

🏭 Lack of Processing Infrastructure

One of the major challenges facing the industry is the shortage of storage facilities, processing factories, and working capital in Cambodia.

As a result, most Cambodian raw cashew nuts are exported to Vietnam, where large processing factories handle millions of tons of imported cashews each year.

Vietnam reportedly imports around 3.5 million tons of raw cashew nuts annually, with Cambodia serving as one of its largest suppliers alongside several African countries.

💰 Government Support Still Limited

The Cambodian government has reportedly provided around $50 million in financing through financial institutions to support domestic purchasing and storage programs.

However, industry leaders say the amount is still relatively small compared to Cambodia’s total production capacity.

📊 2025 Export Figures Also Reached Record Levels

In 2025, Cambodia exported more than 1 million tons of raw cashew nuts, earning approximately $1.5 billion and marking a 27% increase compared to 2024.

The cashew industry continues to play an increasingly important role in Cambodia’s agricultural economy and export sector.
