Thai Official Disputes Bomb Origin as Cambodia Reaffirms Evidence from Previous Border Conflict
Phnom Penh, Cambodia – A renewed exchange of statements has emerged regarding aerial munitions discovered in Cambodia following last year's border conflict, after a Thai official questioned the origin of bomb remnants presented by Cambodian authorities.
Cambodia's Mine Action Centre (CMAC) recently displayed photographs and information about unexploded aerial bombs recovered from affected areas, stating that the munitions were documented during clearance operations conducted after the border clashes.
According to Cambodian officials, the recovered bomb remnants have been preserved as evidence collected during mine clearance and explosive ordnance disposal activities. Authorities said the findings are part of ongoing efforts to remove unexploded ordnance and improve public safety in former conflict areas.
A Thai official later stated that photographs alone could not conclusively determine the origin of the weapons without internationally recognized technical and forensic verification. The official suggested that similar types of aerial bombs have been used by multiple armed forces over the years.
Cambodian authorities, however, maintain that the recovered ordnance and related documentation support their position regarding the events of the previous conflict. Officials noted that explosive remnants collected from affected locations continue to be examined as part of post-conflict clearance operations.
The discussion comes as Cambodia continues extensive mine clearance and unexploded ordnance removal programs aimed at protecting local communities, farmers, and development projects in previously affected regions.
Explosive remnants of war remain a long-term humanitarian challenge in Cambodia, where specialized clearance teams regularly identify and safely dispose of dangerous munitions to reduce risks to civilians.
