
Phnom Penh News: KOREAN COMPANY VERY WORDS HAS ANNOUNCED THE PROVISION OF 8,000 ELECTRIC SCOOTERS TO THE MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT AND PLANS TO INSTALL APPROXIMATELY 200 CHARGING STATIONS NATIONWIDE TO CONTRIBUTE TO HELPING REDUCE GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS IN A BID TO HELP CAMBODIA ACHIEVE CARBON NEUTRALITY BY 2050.
The announcement of the motorcycle donation was made during the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Environment, VERY WORDS, and the Global Green Development Institute (GGGI) on Friday, 7 February, to promote the use of high-quality and environmentally sustainable electric scooters in Cambodia.
Minister of Environment Ang Sophallet stated on the occasion that the 8,000 units of electric motorcycles are an untethered donation, and the ministry will distribute those motorcycles to various state institutions, students and the private sector as well for free and unconditional use.
"I encourage the use of vehicles that do not emit greenhouse gases, not only motorcycles but also electric vehicles, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere, which is the main goal of our Royal Government in leading Cambodia towards achieving carbon neutrality by 2050," the minister said.
The Prime Minister continued that Cambodia welcomes such investments as it supports social work, supports the economy and helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions, while the Royal Government is promoting the use of green materials and investments.
IN THE PAST, THE COMPANY HAS INVESTED MORE THAN $2 MILLION IN AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE ASSEMBLY PLANT IN THE CENTRAL PROVINCE AS WELL AS HELPED CREATE 60 DIRECT GREEN JOB OPPORTUNITIES.
The company will also install at least 200 charging stations to support the use of these motorcycles.
I encourage the use of this electric scooter in Siem Reap Province to transform Siem Reap Province, which is a tourist province, to be cleaner, cleaner, and more attractive to tourists."
The press release from the MoU mentioned that the contribution is expected to contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 5 040 tones per year (according to estimates, one electric scooter consumes an average of 40 km per year).
In addition to the electric vehicle fleet and charging stations, the company will also provide free after-sales services for two years.
In addition to helping Cambodia achieve the 70 percent electricity transportation target as outlined in the long-term carbon-neutral development strategy, the MoU is also an important step towards implementing an internationally recognized greenhouse gas emission reduction project.
THE MINISTRY WILL FACILITATE AND SUPERVISE THE TRANSFER OF ALL THESE ELECTRIC SCOOTERS, AS WELL AS EVALUATE VERY WORDS' PROJECT ON BUILDING ELECTRIC CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE TO PROMOTE ELECTRIC MOBILITY.
Apart from that, the Ministry will also collaborate with partner institutions such as GGGI to help build the capacity of relevant ministries to raise awareness of greenhouse gas emission reduction projects and to ensure compliance with the Executive Rules for the implementation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change in Cambodia, as well as laws, regulations and guidelines of the Royal Government of Cambodia.
"Cambodia's mega climate objectives are supported by technical and innovative solutions, all of which aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from key sectors in Cambodia."
This is in line with the Ministry of Environment's Environment Strategy 2023-2028, the national contribution to implement the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Carbon Neutral Long-Term Development Strategy, as well as promoting adaptation to the use of electric transportation nationwide.
Mr. Kim Sung-Woo, CEO of VERY WORDS, stated on the occasion that through the Article 6 Carbon Financing Framework, the company has decided to invest aggressively in supplying 8,000 units of electric vehicles to government officials of the Royal Government of Cambodia, and this process is also supported by the Government of the Republic of Korea.
He stated: "This partnership will not only enhance air pollution reduction activities in both countries, but will also replace air pollutant-emitting fleets with high-quality and environmentally friendly electric vehicles in Cambodia.
Ms. Shomi Kim, GGGI Representative in Cambodia, also mentioned that as a trusted advisor to the Government of Cambodia, GGGI is proud to support this initiative.

Cooperation under the framework of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change will accelerate the achievement of reducing global climate impacts through the transfer of climate investment from developed countries to developing countries.
"In order to ensure the highest level of environmental integrity with innovative financing mechanisms through the fair use of laws and regulations provided by Article 6, I am thrilled to witness the rapid implementation in infrastructure development and the commissioning of all these electric vehicles," she said.
She praised all stakeholders as well as the Royal Government of Cambodia and the Government of the Republic of Korea for being able to collaborate in implementing internationally recognized greenhouse gas emission reduction projects.
In addition, she also praised VERY WORDS, part of the development and implementation of the project, which has rolled out solutions in line with social and environmental needs to promote a sustainable transport sector in Cambodia.
